Public Safety Supervisors oversee the security of the campus’s buildings and environs. Additionally, they may act as liaisons between external law enforcement agencies and the campus community.

Essential Job Functions (General):

  • Patrols and secures campus grounds and facilities on foot, by bicycle, and by vehicle. Contributes to the protection of campus life and property. Doors, windows, gates, roads, and lighting are inspected to ensure security.
  • Conducts investigations and submits reports regarding campus criminal offenses. Prepares required written reports. Maintains records of daily activities, including a Communication Log sheet containing service calls and building inspections.
  • Continuously monitors and reports any conditions that may pose security or safety risks on College property. Monitors the camera system to ensure no criminal activity is occurring in other areas of the campus.
  • As required, contact law enforcement, fire, and other public agencies. Assists public service representatives, such as fire, medical, and police, with emergency investigations; Enforces College and local laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations in accordance with established procedures.
  • Monitors incoming and outgoing campus traffic at the front gate; responds to incoming calls to campus security and radios information to field patrol units. Offers directions and information about campus facilities, events, and other locations.
  • Monitors campus parking and traffic; issues citations for infractions.
  • Provides crowd and traffic control for campus and off-campus special events.
  • Responds to campus community complaints and assist parties in resolving issues as necessary.
  • Respond to and perform access control duties, such as locking and/or unlocking academic buildings for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Respond to alarms for fire, smoke detectors, and security
  • Provide safety escorts

Responsibilities for Public Safety Supervisor Jobs in California

  • Oversees the daily operations of security at the College, including community safety, parking enforcement, and escort services.
  • Assist with officer scheduling to ensure adequate shift coverage, vacation relief, and call-off replacement. Coordinates and schedules additional campus security for various special events and activities.

  • Ensures that all Public Safety activities are appropriately and timely recorded for review and tracking.
  • Coordinates with other departments regarding programmed research; communicates to individual departments and campus users the impact of new programmed and/or new policies or procedures.
  • Communicates with and/or meets with the public to address complaints and safety concerns; monitors and ensures proper follow-up of public concerns.
  • Examines all required administrative forms/reports pertaining to Public Safety incidents and operations, approves officer-written and submitted reports, and assists Security Officers as required. Ensures accurate and timely report completion.
  • Communicates with law enforcement personnel about crime prevention measures.
  • Participates in and attends various meetings pertaining to Public Safety operations and services.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records, and files for submission to federal, state, and local agencies concerning campus safety programmed and activities.
  • Daily summary of Public Safety incidents and activities for the Director. Analyze data pertaining to security activities to determine their effectiveness and recurring patterns.
  • Fire systems, lighting, fencing, sidewalks, roadways, gates, doors, windows, and landscaping should be inspected and maintained for physical safety on campus.
  • As required, perform the duties of a Public Safety Officer.
  • Performs duties assigned in this area.
  • Notifies students departing from Mills of any schedule changes resulting from unforeseen circumstances.
  • Ensures that shuttle and van drivers deliver their daily safety and maintenance inspection paperwork to the Mills Vehicle Technician no later than 8:45 AM, Monday through Friday.
  • Coordinates with the Automotive Technicians regarding the routine and emergency maintenance of the Vehicle Fleet to ensure that the vehicles are safe and in good operating condition.
