Family and Community Social Workers

Located in multiple communities, the incumbent is responsible for intake and investigation, voluntary services, support services, family preservation and reunification, permanency planning, court procedures, child placements, and after-hours emergency services.

Located in Behchoko and occasionally providing services to the three other communities in the Tlicho Region, the Community Social Services Worker (CSSW) III reports to the Supervisor, Child & Family Services.

The CSSW III is an integral part of the primary community care team, which consists of community health nurses who work out of the health centers, and visiting physicians.

Other resources available include but are not limited to an RCMP detachment, mental health, and addictions counselors, and the continuing care team.

The CSSW III plays a key role in planning, consulting, making referrals, and coordinating activities relevant to case planning, family reunification, family respite, effective foster care, other caregivers, and preventative methods which may strengthen families. Rapid decision-making and problem-solving in day-to-day crises require considerable mental agility.

The workload will average from 15-20 cases, with the incumbent providing emergency social services after regular hours, on holidays, and at weekends. The CSSW III will be required to participate in the family court process according to tight, legislated timelines and to present information in court.

Typically, the qualifications for this position are attained by:

  • A Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Eligible to obtain a Northwest Territories license or registration under the Social Work Profession Act

Oncology Medical Social Worker

The Oncology Medical Social Worker is responsible for providing specialty oncology social work support to cancer clients of all ages, their families, and identified groups.

Reporting administratively to the Territorial Specialist, Cancer Care, the incumbent will receive ongoing clinical supervision and guidance through matrix relationships established within the NTHSSA Clinical Integration team. In collaboration with the Cancer Nurse Navigator, the incumbent will work to coordinate and navigate the care of persons and families affected by cancer in the NWT across their cancer journey.

This position promotes a holistic and comprehensive approach to planning, organizing, teaching, and relationship development that will best meet the needs of the client; acts as a client advocate, facilitating communication between the client, their family, family practitioners, specialists, and other health care professionals; engages in direct cancer client care during various inpatient and outpatient units at Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH); respects the client and family through supporting and maintaining the confidentiality of client information; and recognizes the supportive association within the cancer care trajectory to promote emotional self-care.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by: A baccalaureate Degree in Social Work; Masters’s preparation preferred; a minimum of five (5) years of clinical counseling experience in a health care setting; a minimum of two years of clinical counseling experience in a cancer care setting preferred.

Yearly registration and continuing competency through the Registrar, Professional Licensing of the GNWT, and Department of Health and Social Services are required.
