Applicants falling within this category are eligible to utilize the 32-month window, irrespective of their prior enrollment status in a Master’s program: The determination of the months of study commences with the applicant’s official registration date in the joint program, encompassing the Master’s component as well.
  • Directly enrolled from a bachelor’s to a doctorate (without prior enrollment in a master’s program), the months of study completed are computed from the date of doctoral enrollment.

Candidates are advised to inquire with the institution regarding its criteria for a first-class average. Additionally, they must not have or have previously held a doctoral-level fellowship or scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC to enroll in or complete a doctoral program.

Please note that only the Ph.D. portion of a joint program is eligible for funding.

Eligibility of program of study:

  • To qualify, doctoral programs must incorporate a substantial research element that culminates in an institution-reviewed merit/expert-reviewed thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, or exhibit; such activities must be obligatory for program completion.
  • Clinically-oriented programs of study, such as clinical psychology, and joint graduate research programs leading to a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD), are also eligible programs provided they possess a substantial autonomous research component, as outlined previously.
