About Italian Government Scholarships 2023

For the academic year 2023-24, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) gives grants to foreign citizens* and Italian citizens residing abroad (IRE)**.

To encourage international collaboration in cultural, scientific, and technological domains, to promote the Italian language and culture, and to support Italy’s economic system around the world (in accordance with Law 288/55 and its later amendments and additions).

Grants are available to help students complete study courses and research/training programs at public or legally authorized Italian educational institutions.

Program Details

Master’s Degree

Applicants for Master’s Degree programs are given a period of study of 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months.

In Italy, entry to the first year of a Master’s Degree program requires the completion of a Bachelor’s degree; admission to the second year is offered to applicants who can demonstrate sufficient academic advancement in their first-year exams.

Please keep in mind that enrolment in some Master’s Degree (Laurea Magistrale) courses is only possible after completing admission tests. Applicants are strongly advised to confirm this and any other prerequisites with the university of their choosing. Pre-enrollment via the site https://www.universitaly.it/ may also be required.

Courses of Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance

Grants for Courses of Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) are available for a 6 (six) or 9 (nine) month study period.

Applicants must meet the entry requirements and academic standards stipulated by the relevant Italian AFAM Institute in order to be admitted.

Please keep in mind that enrolment in some AFAM courses is only possible after completing admission tests. Applicants are strongly encouraged to confirm this and other prerequisites with the AFAM Institute of their choosing. Pre-enrollment via the site https://www.universitaly.it/ may also be required.

Ph.D. Program

Ph.D. grants are provided for a term of study of 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months. To be admitted to a Ph.D. program in Italy, applicants must meet the University’s entry requirements and academic standards. They must also produce an entrance letter to the Ph.D. program from the relevant Italian university.

Research projects under academic supervision

Grants for research under academic supervision are available for 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months of study.

This type of grant can be awarded to research projects carried out at Italian Research Institutions (for example, the Italian Research Council – CNR, the Italian National Institute of Health – ISS, the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics – INFN, the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics – INAF, The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – ISPRA, and others), public or recognized Universities, Museums, and Archives.

Applicants must submit a research proposal, as well as their supervisor’s name and contact information (e-mail address), as well as the invitation/acceptance letter from the host University/Institute.

Grants for Italian language and culture courses are available for a three-month study period. They are intended for students who can already demonstrate basic knowledge.
