Scholarship Coverage

The Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program provides the following benefits to the recipient:

  • Economy-class airfare between your home country and the host institution at the beginning of your program and immediately following its conclusion. In addition to round-trip airfare, scholars will receive a $500 travel allowance for each trip, as well as tuition for their graduate program and the cost of obtaining basic medical insurance.
  • A monthly subsistence allowance will be given during the scholarship period to cover all living costs (housing, food, etc., including books). The amount of the allowance varies by country of residence.

Please note that all JJ/WBGSP scholarships cover either the length of the graduate program or two years, whichever is shorter.
The JJ/WBGSP scholarship does not apply to:

  • ISA application fee(s)
  • Costs associated with bringing and/or supporting a scholar’s family
  • supplementary courses or training;
  • Courses that fall short of the minimum credit requirement for a graduate degree;
  • Language instruction is not offered through the graduate program;
  • additional travel throughout the academic program;
  • Expenses associated with research, educational supplements, field trips, participation in workshops or seminars, or internships; or educational equipment such as computers
  • Resident permit fee

Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program Eligibility Criteria

The Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJWBGSP) has the following eligibility requirements:

  • Languages required: English
  • All global countries are eligible.
  • not possess dual citizenship in any developed nation;
  • Maintain your health;
  • A bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) earned at least three years prior to the application deadline;
  • have at least three years of recent development-related work experience following the completion of a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent);
  • be employed full-time in a development-related position at the time of scholarship application submission. The only exception to this requirement is for developing country nationals from a country that will be included on the updated list of fragile and conflicting states provided to applicants in the Application Guidelines for each scholarship call.
  • be unconditionally admitted (except for funding) for the upcoming academic year to at least one of the JJ/WBGSP preferred university master’s programs located outside the applicant’s country of citizenship and country of residence at the time the call for scholarship applications opens. The admission letter must be uploaded prior to applying.
  • not be an Executive Director, his or her substitute, and/or staff of any type of appointment of the World Bank Group, or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption, with “close relative” defined as: mother, father, sister, half-sister, brother, half-brother, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew;
  • Note that all eligibility requirements are strictly adhered to. No exceptions are made. The eligibility requirements WILL NOT CHANGE DURING AN OPEN APPLICATION PERIOD. However, this information may change between the conclusion of one application process and the beginning of the next.
