African Development Bank Internship: Selected candidates will work in various departments at the Bank’s headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, as well as its regional and country offices. However, selected interns will work remotely during their internship.
The African Development Bank (AfDB), founded in 1964, is the continent’s principal development agency, fostering economic growth and social improvement. There are 81 member countries, 54 of which are in Africa (Regional Member Countries). The development agenda of the Bank provides financial and technical assistance for transformative projects that would considerably reduce poverty through inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
Five major areas (High 5s) have been identified for scaling up in order to sharply focus the objectives of the Ten-Year Strategy (2013-2022) and ensure greater developmental impact, namely: energy, agro-business, industrialization, integration, and improving the quality of life for Africans. The Internship program is part of a larger Talent Management Framework that enables the Bank to deliver on its Ten-Year Strategy and High 5s.
Participants in the Program are selected on a competitive basis, based on the business needs of the Bank.
The program’s broad goals are as follows:
- Give students the opportunity to gain professional and hands-on experience with the African Development Bank.
- Provide a pool of possible candidates to the bank for future recruiting.
However, applicants should not expect to be hired immediately after completing the internship.
The Fields of Study Required for the Internship
- Economics, Agriculture, Private Sector Development, Human Capital Development (Education and Health), Environment, Finance, Infrastructure Development, Human Resources Management, Information Technology, Communications, Law, Internal Audit, Budget, Governance, or any other field of study deemed relevant to the Bank’s operations must be among those from which interns are chosen.
- Students working on projects that have a direct influence on the Bank’s purpose will be given special consideration.
Timeline for the 2023 Internship Program
The Internship Program 2023 will run from April to December 2023.
Terms and Conditions
- Each candidate will be granted an internship for a period of not less than three (3) months and not more than six (6) months. Any candidate may only apply for the internship once.
- Selected candidates will work remotely during their internship. As a result, interns must have access to a personal computer, a dependable internet connection, and a living environment that allows for easy and uninterrupted remote working.
- On-site internships may be approved on an extraordinary basis in select circumstances, particularly where the duties and obligations given to interns cannot be completed remotely. In such cases, interns are responsible for their own air travel to and from the Bank’s location, as well as their own upkeep.
- The Bank will make reasonable steps to help the interns in question secure entrance and resident permits.
- Eligible interns will get medical insurance coverage paid for by the bank during their internship.
- A monthly stipend will be granted to eligible interns.
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for an internship:
- Must have reached the age of majority in their country of nationality or origin and be no older than thirty (30) years old when the internship program begins.
- Be currently enrolled in a master’s degree program at a recognized public or private educational institution.
- Within one (1) year of receiving such a degree, the individual may apply for an internship.
- Be citizens of African Development Bank member countries.
- Provide a letter from their school confirming their enrolment or a copy of the previously indicated Degree. Applicants must be fluent in at least one of the two working languages of the banks (English or French).
- Ability to use the bank’s standard software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) is required; knowledge of SAP is preferred.
